Description

A delicious combination of juicy beef, melty cheese, and caramelized onions between two slices of buttery bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 slices Swiss or American cheese
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 8 slices rye or sourdough bread

Instructions

  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced onions and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Cook for about 10 minutes until they become soft and caramelized, stirring occasionally.
  2. While the onions are cooking, shape the ground beef into four equal patties, roughly ¾-inch thick. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.
  3. In another skillet, add 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat. Once sizzling, add the patties and cook for about 4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Add a slice of cheese on top of each patty before finishing.
  4. To assemble, place a slice of bread, add a cheesy patty, a spoonful of caramelized onions, and top with another slice of bread.
  5. In the same skillet, melt another tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Grill each sandwich for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Remove the sandwich, slice diagonally, and serve hot.

Notes

Serve with pickles or coleslaw for a refreshing contrast. Consider dipping sauces for added flavor.
