Ingredients
Scale
- 2 slices of sourdough bread
- 1 cup of Gruyère cheese, grated
- 2 medium sweet onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 1 tablespoon of beef broth (or vegetable broth for vegetarian)
- Fresh thyme, for garnish
- Salt, to taste

Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly for about 20 minutes until golden brown, adding beef broth halfway through.
- Prepare the cheese: Grate about 1 cup of Gruyère cheese.
- Assemble the sandwich: Place two slices of sourdough on a surface. Layer one slice with cheese, onions, and more cheese. Top with the second slice.
- Toast the bread: Add 1 tablespoon of butter to the skillet and toast the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden and crispy.
- Serve and enjoy: Slice the sandwich in half, garnish with fresh thyme, and serve immediately.
Notes
For healthier alternatives, use whole wheat bread or low-fat cheese. Pair with a side salad or dipping sauce for added flavor.
