Description
A delightful twist on classic French onion soup in a bite-sized form, perfect for impressing guests at any gathering.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 French baguette
- 2 large onions
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 teaspoons fresh thyme
- 1 cup beef broth
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Parmesan cheese, grated for topping
Instructions
- Caramelize the Onions: Slice the onions into thin strips. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions, salt, and thyme, stirring occasionally to caramelize slowly for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- Add Broth: Pour in the beef broth once the onions are caramelized. Simmer for another 5 minutes to meld the flavors and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
- Prepare the Baguette: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Slice the baguette into 1-inch thick rounds, arrange on a baking sheet, and lightly brush with melted butter. Bake for about 10 minutes until golden and crispy.
- Assemble the Bites: Spoon the caramelized onion mixture onto each toasted baguette slice. Top each with a sprinkle of Gruyère cheese and grated Parmesan.
- Bake Again: Return the bites to the oven and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch to avoid burning.
- Serve Warm: Allow to cool slightly before serving on a platter.
Notes
For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth. You can personalize by adding minced garlic or sautéed mushrooms to the onion mixture.
