Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour (or gluten-free alternative)
  • 2 large eggs (or egg substitute)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (preferably seasoned or panko)
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (or nutritional yeast for vegan)
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Cut mozzarella cheese sticks into 3-4 inch lengths and keep them chilled.
  2. Set up three shallow bowls: one with flour seasoned with salt and pepper, one with beaten eggs, and one with breadcrumbs, Parmesan, and Italian seasoning.
  3. Dredge each cheese stick in flour, then dip in egg, and finally roll in the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. Freeze the coated mozzarella sticks on a lined baking sheet for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat to around 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the mozzarella sticks in batches for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown, then drain on paper towels.
  7. Serve immediately, optionally with marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For a healthier alternative, bake the coated sticks at 425°F (220°C) until crispy instead of frying.
