  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons butter

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup raisins

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Tear the stale or fresh bread into small pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Heat the Milk: In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium-low heat until simmering. Stir in the butter until melted, then remove from heat.
  3. Mix the Dry Ingredients: Combine sugar, nutmeg, and spices in a separate bowl.
  4. Whisk the Eggs: Whisk the eggs until light and frothy in another bowl.
  5. Combine Ingredients: Pour the warm milk over the bread in the mixing bowl, then add the sugar and spice mix, and whisked eggs. Stir until combined.
  6. Add the Raisins: Fold in the raisins or dried fruits evenly.
  7. Transfer to Baking Dish: Grease an 8×8 inch baking dish, pour the mixture in, and spread evenly.
  8. Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until set and golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve: Allow to cool for a few minutes, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, substitute coconut oil for butter and use non-dairy milk.
